Auxerre - OM (0-2) : OM regain victory
Larguet RINGS THE CHANGES
There were a lot of absentees in the Olympic ranks for their debut in the Coupe de France at Auxerre. Gonzalez, Amavi and Milik were injured and Payet suspended. Nasser Larguet has therefore made some changes in his starting eleven. Pelé took his place in goal. Lirola, Kamara, Balerdi and Sakai made up the defence. Gueye sat in front of the defence and Khaoui and Rongier completed the midfield. In front, Benedetto was with Germain on his right and Henrique on the left.
AN EQUAL FIRST HALF
Both teams took a little time to get into the game, perhaps because of the polar cold that reigned over the Auxerre region at the kick-off. The first chances were not long in coming. Khaoui found Laiton and then Benedetto missed after a nice combination with Khaoui and Germain. From a corner, Balerdi's header was pushed back to the line and Gueye was unable to hit from close range. The midfielder made a nice header, again from the corner, which the AJA goalkeeper blocked.
The locals were not to be outdone. Ndom hit the post with a header and Pele had to make a few parries against the Burgundian offensives.
Benedetto oPENS THE SCORING
For the second period, Nasser Larguet brought in Thauvin and Ntcham in place of Henrique and Rongier. The last recruit of the winter mercato thus made his first steps in competition with his new partners.
L'OM didn't take much time to find the net in the second half. After Ndom had lost the ball, Lirola overran and crossed for Benedetto, who got rid of the marker to place a header out of reach of Laiton.
FIRST SUCCESS FOR Dieng
Cheick Bamba Dieng arrived during the summer from the Diambars academy in Senegal and did not miss his first appearance with the professional team. A few minutes after he came on, in added time, on a long opening, he picked up a ball badly negotiated by the Auxerre defence, got rid of his opposite number thanks to his speed, to run to the goal and deceive Laiton. The 20-year-old Senegalese doubled the lead for OM.
OM HALT POOR RUN
The Olympians had, until today, only won one match in 2021, the first of the calendar year against Montpellier on January 6. Since then, the team had played seven matches without success for a total of five defeats and two draws in all competitions combined. They therefore took advantage of the French Cup to win again, the first under the Larguet era.
Qualified for the Round of 32 of the French Cup after this success in Auxerre, the Olympians will have to wait until 21 February to know their opponent for the next round. The draw for the last 32 of the competition will take place on Sunday 21 February at 7.30 pm. The matches will take place on Saturday 6th and Sunday 7th March 2021.
